If you are attending the 2017 World of Concrete—an annual event dedicated to the commercial concrete and masonry industries—then you must check out the CIM Auction. Over the past 11 years, this auction has raised more than $6 million in funding for CIM programs at dedicated universities. The event includes both silent and live auctions, and past auctioned items have varied from ready mix equipment and supplies to vacation packages and more.
This year’s auction will be held on Wednesday, January 18th during the 2017 World of Concrete. If you plan on being a part of the CIM Auction, whether in person or online, be sure to avoid making the following five mistakes.
Mistake #1: Attending without a budget.
Auctions can be a lot of fun, but they can also be quite tempting if you don’t plan ahead. Before you start the bidding process, be sure to have a budget in mind. The last thing you want to do is go broke because you weren’t prepared.
Mistake #2: Waiting to the last minute.
The CIM Auction will require you to register, so if you wait too long, you could end up losing out on some great items. The best thing to do is to register as soon as possible. Registration instructions can be found on their website.
Mistake #3: Ignoring the details.
Be sure to thoroughly read the description on the auction items before you place your bid. This way, you can make sure that the item is a good fit and usable to either you or your company. For instance, if you are bidding on a vacation package, you want to see if there are specific dates assigned to the package. The last thing you want to do is buy a vacation for a weekend you will be unavailable. In addition, if you’re buying a large item, you want to check on pick-up and delivery information. If you were to win the ready mix truck, for example, you won’t be able to easily stuff it into your airline carry-on.
Mistake #4: Bragging.
Chances are there will be one hot-ticket item that you absolutely must have. When this happens, keep your excitement to yourself. The CIM Auction has hundreds of donated items, so it’s possible that some competition may overlook the item you want. If you continue to express interest, you are bringing attention to that item and asking other people to outbid you.
Speaking of bidding, it’s always a good idea to keep your bid amounts to yourself during silent auctions. After all, if you let someone know what you bid on an item, they’ll know how much they need to beat you.
Mistake #5: Not participating.
The 2017 CIM Auction at World of Concrete is a great chance for you to benefit the industry, network with other professionals, and snag some great items—such as the Sports Weekend in Chicago package donated by Ozinga! Whether you prefer to participate in the silent or live auction, make sure you check it out.
World of Concrete and the CIM Auction are a lot of fun. Hopefully using this information will help you win big this year.
