Ozinga was recently honored with the 2017 Northwest Indiana Partners for Clean Air Business Award from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) in recognition of the company’s voluntary actions taken in 2016 to improve air quality in Northwest Indiana.

PCA has established an award system as a means of recognizing those that go above and beyond their regulatory requirements by voluntarily undertaking actions to improve air quality in Northwest Indiana. There are four award categories:  Municipal, Industrial, Business, and Bicycle.

Ozinga was nominated for the award in the business category by South Shore Clean Cities, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to preserve and revitalize Northern Indiana by promoting the use of alternative fuels and vehicles. The company nominated Ozinga due to our dedication to sustainable operations, including supplying sustainable products and using compressed natural gas to fuel the company’s fleet.

In 2011, Ozinga made a bold pledge to convert all 500 vehicles in our fleet to compressed natural gas by 2020. To date, more than 160 of Ozinga’s heavy-duty ready mix concrete trucks operate using CNG. In late 2016, Ozinga took the first steps toward replacing six more diesel concrete ready mix trucks with CNG concrete ready mix truck glider kits through Terex Corporation in Fort Wayne, IN in a move to support and enhance Indiana's economic development and air quality.

Replacing the six diesel-fueled ready mix concrete trucks with CNG-fueled glider kits will keep an estimated 234,000 gallons of diesel fuel from being used each year, thereby eliminating the harmful emissions they produce while operating in 26 counties in Northern Indiana, including those currently listed as being non-attainment for ozone. According to the U.S. EPA, that is equal to removing 439 passenger vehicles from the roads for one year, 27.5 tanker trucks-worth of diesel fuel and the amount of carbon sequestered by 2,000 acres of U.S. forests in one year.

In 2016, Ozinga was named a Top 50 Green Fleet by Heavy Duty Trucking magazine. The honor is given to companies leading the industry in the adoption of sustainable practices, policies and technologies.

“South Shore Clean Cities is proud of our long-standing relationship with Ozinga and is even more proud of the company’s role in leading the way for the increased use of compressed natural gas in the Midwest,” said Carl Lisek, executive director of South Shore Clean Cities. “The Ozinga family lives its historic, faith-based mission in many ways, including its sustainable operations. The company’s bold pledge to convert all 500 vehicles in its fleet to compressed natural gas by 2020 is inspiring and the progress they’ve made toward achieving that goal proves it is possible to embrace alternative fuels while running a thriving, growing business. Ozinga’s Partners for Clean Air award is well deserved and we were proud to play a role in it by nominating them for the recognition.”

Don Rapley and Rich DeBoer accepted the award on Ozinga’s behalf.
