Ozinga ready mix driver Billy Byrd Sr. won the Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association Mixer Driver Competition and is headed to the National Ready Mix Concrete Association National Mixer Driver Championship held in Texas this fall. Ozinga driver Chad Vermillion took third place at this year’s competition, while drivers Justin Hagen and John Dowell also competed at the state level. The IRMCA competition tests drivers on a written exam, truck inspection, and up to 10 driving challenges.
Last year, Byrd. took second place at the NRMCA’s National Mixer Driver Championship and received the highest score on his written test—99%. He is looking forward to competing at the national level again this year.
Ozinga drivers are no strangers to the IRMCA competition. In 2015 and 2016, Ozinga South Bend driver John Dowell took home first place and was named state champion of the skills competition, earning him a trip to the NRMCA National Championship.
“We like to say Ozinga has the best drivers in the industry,” said Indiana Executive Vice President Joe Sanders. “It’s very gratifying when our guys compete with the best drivers in the state and take first and third place. It’s an amazing accomplishment, and we are all very proud of Billy, Chad, John and Justin.”
The NRMCA competition will take place at ConcreteWorks in October.
