Earlier this month, Ozinga provided compressed natural gas (CNG) ready mix trucks during Green Ways 2Go’s Alternative Fuel Vehicles for First Responders training courses. These courses, contracted in cooperation with Chicago Area Clean Cities, address the most typical issues first responders encounter in their day-to-day work.
During this course, first responders had the chance to view Ozinga’s CNG ready mix truck up close and see firsthand how these vehicles work. This allowed them to determine how best to immobilize the vehicles should they be involved in accidents or experience other damage.
Attendees also learned the differences between electrical vehicles, CNG vehicles, liquid natural gas vehicles (LNG), and propane vehicles, as well as variations of biodiesel and ethanol-fueled vehicles. They were then educated on the proper way to fight fires involving alternative fuel vehicles to keep themselves and bystanders safe.
Tim Milburn, partner at Green Ways 2Go, developed the two and a half hour training course last year and worked with Clean Cities chair John Walton to share it with interested fire departments. The course is now mandatory for six communities in West Chicago. More than 200 first responders participated in this month’s nine training sessions.
“The training we’ve received today is invaluable,” said Rich Savoia of the Roselle Fire Department. “From a professional standpoint, I think it will come in handy anytime we’re on the scene and encounter an alternative fuel vehicle.”
